Design beyond the canvas.
One Structured, Editable Source.
DesignForge AI is an early-stage, AI-native design environment exploring how UX creation, tokenized design systems, interactive prototyping, and developer handoff can operate from one unified, deterministic model rather than fragmented tools.
Design work is split across too many tools.
A digital product moves through requirements, information architecture, interface structure, design-system rules, interaction validation, responsive testing, and engineering handoff. When these live in disconnected tools, teams face duplicated effort, fragmented assets, inconsistent components, and handoff gaps.
No customer interviews, workflow audits or usability studies have been run yet. These are problems to test, not findings.
"How might we connect creating, governing, prototyping and implementing digital experiences, without making designers surrender control of their files, systems or decisions to AI?"
One Document
Pages, layers, components, variables, interactions, and assets in one canonical document structure.
Structured Objects
AI that plans and revises editable design objects rather than only flat, un-inspectable screenshots.
First-Class Tokens
Tokens, variables, and components that can be inspected, reused, and mapped deterministically to CSS.
Small Runtimes
Prototypes with real state, data, conditions, and replayable behavior rather than static noodle links.
Same Structure In, Code Out
One design structure feeding a deterministic React & CSS code pipeline without manual redesign.
Visible Fidelity
Import gaps explicitly disclosed in fidelity reports, never silently flattened or discarded.
One canonical document is the source of truth.
The canvas renderer, inspector, AI context builder, prototype runtime, and React compiler are different consumers of the same model. Manual and AI edits run through one command and transaction mechanism, preventing competing versions of the same screen.
Structured, Not Pixels
Objects have stable identities, hierarchy, and mathematical relationships. The design is a data tree, not a raster buffer.
One Mutation Path
Manual mouse edits and AI prompts share the same command and transaction layer, guaranteeing unified undo and attribution history.
Derived, Never Competing
Caches, prototypes, and code previews refresh reactively from the canonical model instead of becoming competing sources of truth.
A professional design instrument, not a dashboard with a canvas inside.
The editor keeps three core hierarchies strictly separated, so project navigation never contaminates the layer tree, and a layout frame is never confused with a component instance.

Canvas First
Panels support the design rather than compete with it. They resize, collapse, reset, and remember designer preferences.
Context Over Clutter
The properties inspector shows only attributes relevant to active selections, with advanced controls revealed via progressive disclosure.
Visible System State
Save status, current selection, active tool mode, and background AI processes stay readable in the footer status bar.
| Principle | Design Implication |
|---|---|
| Stable Geography | Core shortcuts, toolbar positions, and inspector placement stay predictable across all modes. |
| Direct Manipulation + Exact Input | Drag visually on the canvas, then fine-tune with sub-pixel numeric and keyboard inputs. |
| Reversible Work | Every mutation is undoable, multi-step AI changes are previewed with diffs, and destructive actions require explicit confirmation. |
| Accessible by Construction | Keyboard navigation, WCAG focus rings, screen-reader semantic roles, zoom scaling, and zero drag-only dead-ends. |
| Human-in-Control AI | AI proposals are inspectable, explainable, previewable in diff mode, and explicitly rejectable. |
From brief to handoff, on one document.
The workflow represents a disciplined story spine, not an autonomous magic button. The model assists with exploratory generation; the human designer clarifies intent, resolves edge cases, and approves production variations.
- 1. Brief & Constraints: Establish product goals, target user personas, platform targets (Web, iOS, Desktop), and architectural constraints.
- 2. Clarify Ambiguities: Resolve unknowns and state requirements before drawing vector paths or generating screens.
- 3. Structure & System Planning: Define page topology, navigation flow, reusable component tokens, and responsive breakpoints.
- 4. Structured Generation: Synthesize wireframes and high-fidelity UI composed of real editable vector layers and typography styles.
- 5. Systemic Validation: Validate spatial layout, design token compliance, color contrast (WCAG AAA), and link destinations.
- 6. Targeted Iteration: Execute surgical, localized design adjustments where each change maintains a discrete undo transaction.
- 7. Stateful Prototyping: Wire up interactive states, input variables, and conditional branches inside the canvas runtime.
- 8. Multi-Device Preview: Test simulated device viewports, orientation shifts, dynamic text resizing, and dark/light modes.
- 9. Deterministic Code Handoff: Compile the document structure directly into clean, modular React component trees with CSS variables.
Precision on the canvas, with state kept in sync.
The core strength lies in its predictable interaction model: responsive direct selection, clear hover target feedback, reversible operations, and bidirectional synchronization between canvas, layer list, and token inspector.
Active Working Surface
Nested frame layer trees, zoomable vector canvas with tool shelves, contextual property panels for Design, Prototype, Inspect, and Export modes, and local-first persistence indicators.
Vector & Color Engine
Bézier path editing, smooth/corner anchor nodes, non-destructive boolean geometry, gradient manipulation directly on the canvas, and single-gesture undo history.
Tokens and components as document entities.
Tokens, variables, typography styles, components, variants, and responsive layout rules live directly inside the document model rather than an external asset silo. Both the human designer and AI assistant inspect and reuse authorized components before creating new primitives.
Hierarchical Tokens
Primitive raw values, semantic intent tokens (bg.surface.elevated), and component-specific token references.
Multimodal Collections
Variable collections with instant theme switches: light/dark color schemes, high-contrast modes, and compact/cozy spatial density.
Components & Variants
Instances with explicit property overrides, component state matrices (Hover, Pressed, Disabled), and dependency graphing.
AI that works with the design system, not around it.
The AI engine operates as a strictly typed assistant that proposes structured operations. It does not synthesize arbitrary un-editable pixels or bypass the editor's schema validation, leaving full authority in the designer's hands.
System Guardrails
Generated screens must be composed of real editable frames. Existing tokens are matched automatically, new components are tagged as external until reviewed, and destructive operations trigger confirmation modals.
Transparent Attribution
After each generation prompt, the system provides a clear report: what layers were added/modified, what assumptions were made, what design tokens were mapped, and what requires manual designer review.
Prototypes as small application runtimes.
Prototyping goes beyond linked hotspot clicks. By incorporating state machines, typed variables, mathematical conditions, and event logs, reviewers can experience authentic edge cases, form validations, and transactional branches.
Triggers & Actions
Pointer clicks, keyboard shortcuts, mobile gestures, lifecycle mount events, modal overlays, and component variant toggles.
State & Conditionals
Scoped variables (string, number, boolean), constrained logic expressions, real form validation states, and reactive state machines.
Interactive Replay
Event logs, live variable inspectors, virtual clock execution, and deterministic session replay for bug reporting.
Translate structure, not pixels.
The compiler takes an immutable snapshot of the canonical document and applies deterministic code transformation rules. While LLMs help suggest semantic component names, structural code correctness never depends on stochastic text generation.
Clean Architectural Output
Design tokens map directly to CSS custom properties. Layout frames map to CSS Grid or Flexbox with auto-margins. Semantic HTML elements (<header>, <nav>, <button>) are emitted based on explicit layer classifications.
Independent Codebase
The exported React codebase runs independently without requiring DesignForge libraries at runtime. Any unsupported vector properties or effects are clearly reported in an export diagnostic log.
Preserve meaning, disclose loss.
Importing external files should be structure-preserving by default, without pretending that complex third-party proprietary formats translate with 100% fidelity.
Structure-Preserving
Maintains frame hierarchies, layout parameters, style tokens, and linked image assets while generating an honest conversion report.
Maximum Editability
Converts external shapes into native editable nodes, alerting users whenever proprietary gradients or filters cannot be identically matched.
Reference Overlays
Retains an underlying raster reference canvas so designers can compare converted vector layers directly against original designs.
Projects organize work. Files hold the design.
Enterprise organization roles and project permissions are clearly partitioned. Each project manages its own members, access rights, and file inventories, with role enforcement executed in the data layer rather than client-side UI visibility.
Why deterministic operations and human approval matter.
| Architectural Decision | Core Rationale | Trade-Off & Compromise |
|---|---|---|
| Canonical Document Model | Single Source of Truth: Editing, AI assistants, stateful prototypes, and code export all share one structured document model. | Engineering Overhead: Requires rigorous schema versioning, strict validation tests, and backward-compatible migration adapters. |
| Command / Transaction Mutator | Audit & Reversibility: Guarantees unified multi-level undo, explicit user attribution, and atomic transactional rollback for multi-step AI edits. | Interaction Discipline: Every canvas mouse gesture and keyboard shortcut must route cleanly through the command dispatch layer. |
| Deterministic Core, AI Advisory | Predictable Computation: Geometry, layout calculations, accessibility checks, and code generation remain 100% mathematically predictable. | No Full Autonomy: AI stays strictly advisory on ambiguous design choices; human review remains indispensable before committing. |
| Local-First Storage | Performance & Privacy: High data sovereignty, zero offline latency, and instant responsiveness without server network round-trips. | Multiplayer Complexity: Real-time multi-user collaboration requires dedicated CRDT sync boundaries and conflict resolution. |
| Modular Monolith First | Velocity & Coherence: Rapid architectural coherence without distributed microservice overhead during prototype and early launch phases. | Modular Rigor: Strict internal module boundaries must be actively enforced to prevent spaghetti dependencies as features expand. |
| Transparent Import Reports | Radical Honesty: Establishes institutional trust by explicitly listing which Figma/Sketch features converted cleanly and which were approximated. | Expectation Setting: Refuses to claim effortless "one-click 100% magic import" marketing promises. |
